About Laura

I've been practicing as a therapist since 2004, initially in private and group settings, then joining Kaiser Permanente Psychiatry in 2012 before returning to sole private practice in 2021. My clinical social work degree from Virginia Commonwealth University ranked in the top 5 in the field, has been complemented by post-graduate studies at the University of Virginia Mary Ainsworth Clinic and the American School of Clinical Psychology in Washington, DC.

While I utilize various therapy methods, such as CBT and ACT, to address anxiety and depression, my true passion lies in employing EMDR for trauma and stress disorders. I've had the privilege of training with and seeking consultation from Andrew Leeds, an EMDRIA board member, and foundational researcher in the field. Many of my clients have found EMDR to be a swift and highly effective treatment they wish they had discovered sooner. Feel free to explore the links highlighting the effectiveness of EMDR and reach out with any questions.

In addition, I bring extensive expertise in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), another highly effective therapy style that I wholeheartedly endorse. I was privileged to be part of a 2012 Ben Hudnell Grant aimed at developing a DBT program for the Kaiser Permanente Psychiatry Department, initially at the Washington DC clinic. Later, I led the program for KP Psychiatry in Pleasanton, CA, overseeing operations from 2015 to 2021. I believe the coping skills taught in DBT are indispensable, not only for alleviating suffering and addressing problematic behaviors but also for cultivating a life filled with purpose and fulfillment.

While DBT was initially designed to assist individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder traits, its application has expanded to encompass a wide range of challenges, including mood swings, anger management, relationship issues, binge eating, bipolar disorders, anxiety, depression, and addiction recovery support. I particularly recommend DBT for those struggling with anger or emotional shutdown, as it addresses the complexities of interpersonal dynamics where difficulties often arise. Whether you're new to the process or experienced, I offer basic DBT and advanced practice sessions and am dedicated to supporting your journey.

Sophie is a 2-year old Maltese and Poodle mix, she is hypo-allergenic, and is in training for the canine good citizen program offered through the American Kennel Association.  You are welcome to have her sit with you as a added comfort during session or she can be in her carrier, per your preference. Many clients find her soothing and like to end session by giving her a treat, which I keep readily available.

On a more personal note, I hail from Virginia and later called Washington DC home. In a stroke of serendipity, I was offered an opportunity to relocate to the East Bay during a chance encounter while on vacation in 2013. Since then, I've embarked on a journey filled with love and family. I'm blessed to have met my spouse and to have embraced the role of co-parent to a remarkable special-needs child. Our home now lies in the heart of Livermore, where my husband serves as a dedicated public school teacher in special education.

You'll often find us, along with our beloved peach pup Sophie, meandering through downtown, indulging in gelato or exploring the vibrant dining scene. We delight in visiting the local Livermore vineyards and breweries, immersing ourselves in live music and art events whenever possible. When I'm not tending to my garden or hitting the trails for a hike or bike ride, you'll likely find me finding solace and rejuvenation in the company of my cherished hula 'ohana. I'm deeply honored to study Hawaiian dance, chant, and culture with them. Aloha and mahalo!
